InnerChef, a food tech startup founded by entrepreneur and investor Rajesh Sawhney, has acquired two startups - Bengaluru-based EatonGo and Gurgaon-based Flavour Labs.
Sawhney said both deals are acqui-hires, that is, acquisitions of talent more than the business/technology of the firms.
EatonGo, founded by food tech engineer Udit Saran and former Myntra employee Taru Raaj Agrawal, specializes in Continental and Indian breakfast and brunches.
Flavour Labs, conceptualized at the Stanford Business School's Ignite programme in innovation and entrepreneurship, was founded by Nandita Shetty, Rohan Rajgarhia, Ankur Agarwal and Vasanth Kamath in 2014 that has popularized the concept of fun dining via food trucks. It introduced concepts like idliwich (idli sandwiches) and dosa wraps served with non-traditional fillings.
Sawhney said, "EatonGo will give us a foothold in Bengaluru that has emerged as the fastest growing food market in the country because of its cosmopolitan outlook and higher disposable income. With Flavour Labs, we will leverage the learnings of running mobile kitchens and introduce a food truck in every city we are present in."
Post the acquisition, EatonGo's Saran will head supply chain operations for InnerChef and Agarwal will lead its new initiatives. Flavour Labs' Shetty will oversee operations and new city launches.
Shetty said, "This partnership will allow for scaling up (food trucks) in a lean and efficient manner: while Flavour Labs has developed expertise in the nuts and bolts of food trucks and related operations, InnerChef envisions being in 100 cities across India and already runs kitchens in 6 different cities. It's also exciting to see two of our signature mains and drinks now featured on InnerChef's menu." Shetty worked as a neuroimaging researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston.
InnerChef, founded by Bal DiGhent, Sanjeev Singhal and Sawhney in 2015, has European, Mediterranean and Indian cuisines on its menu and specializes in salads with low-calorie dressing, Panini and salad combos, pasta, snacks and desserts. It has raised Rs 11 crore in funding from investors including redBus co-founder Phanindra Sama, Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Anupam Mittal, founder of People Group which has portals including Shaadi.com, and GoQii's Vishal Gondal.
"We do 1,000 orders every day with an average order value of over Rs 500. We are gross-margin profitable," Sawhney said. The company, which is present in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, is looking to launch in Chennai and Hyderabad shortly.
